Recent developments, such as machine to machine communications, the growth of user-generated content, the importance of video, the increasing use of mobile Internet access, social networking, increased device capabilities, have raised great challenges to today’s network infrastructures and services. Practical issues such as managing the complexity of current networks, explosions in the numbers of connected devices with M2M and the Internet of Things, requirements on openness to new applications, external service providers and business models, the network as a critical infrastructure, demands for ubiquitous connectivity to support ambient intelligence systems, and of course cost reduction, call for future advanced networks technology. For instance, combined with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Space-Air-Ground (SAG) integrated networks make long-distance, high-speed wireless networking feasible; software-defined networking technology empowered by new Artificial Intelligence algorithms could bring profound evolutions of what networks are capable of. We also see Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) having recently evolved as an emerging technique by moving the computing and storage resources from the cloud to the edge of network.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and academics in the field of system, networking and communication to discuss major challenges, research problems, and potential applications of future advance networks. We are expected to share new findings, exchange ideas, discuss research challenges and report latest research efforts that cover a variety of topics. We gratefully thank the sponsorship of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Waterloo, and Shanghai Computer Society – Youth Working Committee.
