Opportunistic Data Forwarding in VANETs

Though the main purpose of VANETs is to provide safer travel experience and better road efficiency, VANETs can also be leveraged to offer free data delivery service with/without the help of mobile networks (3G/4G/5G), e.g., sending delay-tolerant contents from the vehicle of a user to the vehicle of his/her friend or the evidence given from a witness of a crime/accident to a police station. A few straightforward methods such as random walk or flooding can be used but they either lead to long end-to-end delay or cause unaffordable network traffic cost. In this project, we study new opportunistic data forwarding schemes in VANET environments, which try to minimize the network traffic overhead and end-to-end delay and maximize the packet delivery ratio at the same time.
